The Casual App Gamer: Why we Love Fighting Games
Fighting – what a genre! Not many people dislike fighting games for a reason, and that’s because they’re so versatile. There’s so much you can do and there’s the option to play as your favorite character and fight like a badass. Our favorite types of fighting games are the ones that also merge with the RPG genre, our reason for this is because roleplaying games take you away from reality and into a whole new world. Fight in 1v1 battles or team battles, discover your characters special powers – the possibilities are endless!
Fighting games are definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, but they sure are fun to us. What makes a fighting game good, you might ask? It’s important that a fighting game:
- allows you to get up close and personal with your opponent
- makes you feel powerful
- doesn’t have too complicated controls
- the special attacks are worth the in-app purchase
- if it’s against a bot, the bot can’t be too easygoing – we like a challenge
- has the ability to keep you wanting to play more
At the Casual App Gamer, we have gone through our fair share of fighting games that have really impressed us from the striking graphics to the console-like controls. Here are a few of the very favorites that we have reviewed so far:
I, Gladiator
This casual app is based on Gladiator tournaments and to win, you have to fight a bunch of opponents that are released into the arena. The weapon you get to use is a sword which adds to the old vibe, and good for those who don’t enjoy shooting games. Our personal feelings on the game were that it was very high-quality in terms of graphics, and the detailed storyline made the gameplay interesting. The controls were a little bit hard to get used to but it didn’t affect the overall experience too much.

Smash Champs
In Smash Champs, you have to train your fighters up to battle their opponents. Watch the punches, kicks, and slaps and swipe the screen while collecting coins and XP. We mostly enjoyed this game due to how unique it was. The fighting technique reminded us of Fruit Ninja and we thought that was really cool.

Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag
The aim of Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag is to dodge, attack, block, parry, and activate special abilities during staged battles against enemies, using finger taps and swipes to get the job done. We thought this was a great fighting game for anime lovers even though I’m not one.

Shadow Fight 3
“The world of shadows stands at the edge of an epic war. The incomprehensible force that came out of the Gates of Shadows many years ago is now an ordinary source of power. The Shadow energy is a tool and a weapon nowadays. But not everyone finds this state of affairs a good thing.”
Beat Street
This is the first beat ’em up with intuitive single touch controls and is a love letter to the 90s beat ’em up genre! Evil gangs are terrorizing Toko City and the citizens need your help! Fight your way through hordes of enemies and become the new hero in town.”
The Executive!
“From the creators of the award-winning “Pizza Vs. Skeletons” comes The Executive: a fast-paced, cinematic, martial arts action game designed from the ground up for iPhone and iPad. You are the CEO of a company that has been infiltrated by werewolves, and it’s your job to save your employees, and eventually the entire city, from their dastardly schemes.”
Dan The Man
“With more than 10 MILLION installs and growing each day, it’s easy to see why Dan the Man has been awarded as one of the “Best of Games for 2016” across the major mobile platforms! This legendary game dials back to gaming’s retro roots to bring you an action platformer brawler that you’d swear you’ve played in the old arcade!
