Gameplay
I expected CodyCross to be more like a traditional crossword game, however, it wasn’t and I’m not complaining. CodyCross works with a grid just like traditional crosswords and you only need to work out the words that are going from left to right. By figuring out these words, with the help of a clue at the bottom of the screen, you can unlock letters for other words. There were a few instances where I was stuck so I just simply moved onto the next word. I like that it’s an option to skip because once you’re done with all the words you know, the ones you don’t know have pretty much been half completed by the unlocked letters.
Graphics
Although simple, the graphics are great for a game like this. Word games don’t need any crazy good graphics, but what I like to look for is how they’re set out. CodyCross is set out really simply with the grid at the top, power-ups in the middle, and the keyboard at the bottom to write the words.
Music & Sounds
As this game is based around an alien, the music and sounds very much fit into that theme which I love. There isn’t much to say about the sounds apart from the fact they add substance to the gameplay and I liked hearing them. I especially found the winning noise satisfying.
Controls
I know I said I loved how the game is set out, but the keyboard to type the words on is far too small. As you can see from the gameplay video, more often than not I would accidentally type the wrong letter. I understand that it’s hard to fit in the whole keyboard but they could have it so only the relevant letters pop up. That way the game is slightly easier, and you aren’t at risk of pressing the wrong letter and screwing up your score.

The Verdict
With the surprise of CodyCross not being like a traditional crossword puzzle, I was happy about it. I probably won’t be keeping this game on my phone permanently but I definitely see it as one I’ll come back to ever so often. Not only was it well set out, but the words were challenging and had me on my toes for sure.
