Gameplay
You’re told by a man named Francis Kwan that you’re in charge of bringing the place back to its former glory and that he’ll make you a world-class jockey.
Creating your character is the first thing you get to do when you enter the game – but there isn’t much detail to it. You pick a face, a helmet and an outfit. And you’re on your way to becoming a jockey!
Purchasing a horse is what comes next and you get the option between two horses: Foolish Scenario and Assertive Acorn. They both have the exact same speed, sprint energy, acceleration, and price so I picked the horse that looked the nicest: Assertive Acorn.
Entering the Three Oaks race, you’re told how to control your horse and where your horse likes to stay (middle) during the race. There is a bar at the top of the screen that fills up – when it is full you can use the sprint button to get past everyone. I found it the most beneficial to use the sprint button when on the final stretch of the race so you can get past everyone quickly.
Graphics
I found the graphics to be really weird looking, especially the faces on the characters. But visually, the races look great and as real as you probably could get a mobile horse racing game to look. Surprisingly, the game didn’t lag at all despite it looking like the type (you know what I mean).
Music & Sounds
During the actual gameplay, there’s no music but instead, a commentator who talks about what’s happening during the race – just like an actual horse race! This gives the feeling of the race being just like how it is in real life, and I thought it was a brilliant effect. There’s no feeling when you hear that you’re in the lead!
Controls
Rival Stars’ controls are a little bit too easy to follow for a racing game. Before you start the race, you need to tap the screen when it hits a certain point on the bar so you can get a good start. The controls in the actual race include a sprint button, a slow down button, and to flip your camera. Your horse will automatically run with a tap and all you have to do is drag your finger in order to move your horse.

The Verdict
Rival Stars has great potential to be a brilliant racing game for all ages and genders. However, I found the controls to be too simplistic and the graphics to not be good enough. I won’t be playing this again but if you’re a big fan of watching the races – this might just be for you.
