Hey Casual Gamers!
Sonic The Hedgehog has always been one of my favorite games since his appearance on the Sega Genesis. Decades later and numerous games and animation later, our blue blur is back at it again doing what he does best.
Sonic Forces offers a race off against iconic Sonic characters at they claim who’s the fastest of the land. With weapons and a huge list of maps to race on, is this casual app worth any of your time and phone space?

Gameplay
Sonic Forces is basically doing what Sonic and his team does best, running at high speeds!
This time around players will have to unlock iconic characters through racing battles with other players or computers. There’s a pretty legit roster and courses can be rather competitive.
With missions and time chests there feels like there’s always something to do and get rewarded for.
The best way to describe this casual app is a Sonic version of Mario Kart. Which is always welcomed on my phone or tablet.
Graphics
Sonic Forces reminds me alot of the recent Sonic shows on Netflix. The iconic look of all the heroes and colorful stages entice repeat gameplay.
The stages take a bit of getting used to, and if players aren’t ready they can get caught up in the backgrounds. This isn’t too much of problem until you start tripping over the hazards.
Power ups and rings are attractive enough to not miss. To say this is a great way to step into the race is an understatement.
Music
Sonic Forces has the background music that sets the mood to race! While there’s nothing to memorable as far as me humming it outside, there is enough of a feel to bob your had to the beat. Sound effects are helpful as they can hint when something is coming your way. The most iconic sound of losing rings doesn’t dominate your ears, but it will do enough to help guide players back to the right direction.
This is definitely a great headphone experience. It won’t hurt gameplay too much if there’s a reason for silent mode tho.
Controls
Sonic Forces has rather simple controls yet there’s a curve that demands improvement. Players that thing this casual app is a walk in the park will be promptly reminded to pay attention!
Navigating through the menus feels fluid, but engaging in battles with friends feels like it could be better.
To battle friends, there is the need of tickets which can usually be obtained by taking an advertisement to the face. Afterwards, a four digit code must be sent so the other player can take an advertisement to the face and input the code.
Sadly these process only gives about five races before the need of more tickets is required. I suppose it’s better than nothing, but an in-game friend’s list would make this minor hassle into something efficient and dare I say, casual!
The Power of in-app Purchases
Sonic Forces is all about hitting players with Ads. While there’s not ones before and after races, doing anything outside of racing will require 30 seconds you can’t get back.
Prices for items seems in tune with what is offered, yet there’s nothing much that sticks out as far as a great deal.
Wining races also gives players pieces of heroes and rings that can be use for leveling current heroes.
This casual app has one of the cringe worthy ways of gaining “free” RSR. By accepting and engaging in offers outside of the app players can receive a moderate number of RSR. I personally hate this kind of setup as it’s easy for players to be taken advantage of by signing up for services that tend to be forgotten about. Those also tend to be the ones that hit the wallet at the worst times.
The Verdict
Overall, Sonic Forces is a great casual app that offers racing among friends. For me this is the best selling point as not too many app games offer this kind of gameplay. It’s rather hard to make a Sonic game unlikable, and this casual app is no exception. There’s nothing like getting away from the normal grind like racing at top speed to the top of the leaderboards.
