Wonka’s World of Candy is a match-3 puzzle game for iOS and Android. It’s inspired by the classic 1971 movie Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and Wonka’s World of Candy shows you what happened before the movie. By solving a series of match-3 puzzles, you will help Willy Wonka upgrade his factory and make it a fun yet safe place for the Oompa Loompas to work.

Gameplay

Transform Willy Wonka’s factory ready for the children to arrive!

So, the aim of Wonka’s World of Candy is to get the chocolate factory ready for when the children arrive. How do you do this? Well, the gameplay is extremely similar to Gardenscapes. Which doesn’t make a lot of sense considering the games are made by different companies. But hey, they could be linked somehow. I don’t know.

When you enter the game, you’re greeted by Willy Wonka basically telling you that the factory is in pieces and he needs you to help fix it. Of course, you jump to the chance. It’s Willy Wonka!!!

So to start, you’re told that there’s a tree to plant, but it costs one star to do. And you need to complete match-3 games to earn stars. The match-3 games start off ridiculously easy at first but they progressively get harder. Once you’ve completed a level, you’ll be gifted the star and then you get to choose from a selection of trees to add to your factory. I went with the gummy bear tree.

After that, you, the Oompa Loompa’s and Willy Wonka have a chat before moving onto the next thing to fix. And that’s the gameplay – just do that repeatedly until you combust.

Graphics

The graphics are very detailed – the characters look just like the actors from the movie!

Wonka’s World of Candy has both fun and colorful graphics that definitely compliment the overall gameplay. Like Gardenscapes, the characters don’t move much, however, they all look extremely similar to what the characters looked like in the game. I like how Zynga has clearly spent a lot of time perfecting the graphics.

Another thing I must add is that the graphics have some kind of 3D effect – when you move your phone, the background moves with it. Although this feature doesn’t add to the gameplay, I think it’s a nice touch and just shows that extra bit of effort.

Music

The music is pretty annoying and repetitive and doesn’t live up to the music in the 1971 film. I don’t know if there is some kind of copyright issue, but they were able to add the characters so I’m sure that’s not the case. I spent my time singing Pure Imagination while playing the game anyway. If they won’t add it, I will!

Willy Wonka has a few lines on top of this, not many, but he has lines. Once you complete a level, he will say something. I have no idea if it’s taken from the movie or if they hired someone who sounds like Gene Wilder but it sounds pretty cool to me.

Controls

Match 3 to score points!

Wonka’s World of Candy’s controls didn’t exactly give me the wow factor but they’re decent enough. This is definitely a “touching” game. For the match-3 levels, you drag the icons across to match 3. That’s it. There are no complicated controls that you need to fully commit to – this is definitely an easy game to play while having a coffee break or on your commute to work.

The Power of in-app Purchases

Purchase packs and coins from the store!

Like the vast majority of app games, the store is divided into bundles and coins. Here is what you can get your hands on:

  • 900 coins for £0.99
  • 2,800 coins for £2.99
  • 10,050 coins for £9.99
  • Sweet Pack – 2,800 coins, 3 Wonka Bars, 150 sugar, and 1 glove for £3.99
  • Starter Pack – 5,000 coins, and 12 hours of unlimited lives for £7.99
  • Delightful Pack – 4,750 coins, 3 Wonka Bars, 1 sweet, and two gloves for £6.99

Unfortunately, there is no way to purchase stars, which makes sense because that defeats the whole object of the game. If you want to help Willy Wonka, I’m sorry but you’ll have to work for it. The packs definitely make your journey a little bit easier, though.

The verdict

What did you think of Willy Wonka’s World of Candy?

If I’m honest, Wonka’s World of Candy didn’t live up to what I thought it would be. I kept constantly seeing ads for it and saw it was quite high up on the store so I thought people must be enjoying it. However, as I said, it’s very similar to Gardenscapes and Homescapes and I don’t know how to feel about that. To me, there are far too many games like this taking up the app store. It’s too much and not unique in the slightest.

I did, however, enjoy the graphics and the cool 3D effect they added when you move your phone. I also liked how detailed the characters were and how they sometimes spoke. If you’re a fan of the old school movie, I can imagine you’re going to like this game no matter what.
