The wait is over! Mario Kart Tour is here. After hearing the rumors about it close to a year ago, Nintendo fans have been going crazy over the thought of the best Super Mario game coming to mobile! Here on The Casual App Gamer, we’ve been itching to download it and after the slight disappointment from Super Mario Run and Dr. Mario World, we weren’t sure what to expect…
Entering the game, you’re presented with a Warp Pipe that you need to drag down and it’ll reveal your first character! I got Toad which gives you three mushrooms to use in on go for a long-lasting boost. The second character I got was Bowser who hurls Bowser’s Shell in front of your kart to scatter opponents.
You’re then taken through a tutorial that teaches you how to use the controls and win each race, which is pretty similar to the console games. Collect special items to win – simple.
As for the graphics, they’re very similar to console-quality which I wasn’t surprised to see from Nintendo. I wouldn’t expect anything less from such a huge game developer. I did, however, find it strange how the game to be horizontal instead of vertical, though.
Music & Sounds
The music and sounds definitely made me feel very at home with Mario Kart. Nintendo made sure they didn’t compromise on the well-known music as this probably would’ve ruined the whole gameplay for me.
The controls are where I’ve heard a lot of complaints.
There are two types of controls:
- Simple – Slide your finger left or right to steer. This style may be easier for new players.
- Drift – Slide your finger left or right to drift. This style is for those who want to fine-tune their steering.
I went with simple as I figured that would be best for me as a new player, however, it was still pretty hard to control. You need to slide your finger left or right at the bottom of the screen, but beware that there are a lot of tight corners and you’re not able to turn quick enough to make them. I do feel as if the controls put a huge downfall on the app’s gameplay and could be the make and break for Mario Kart Tour as a whole.

I thought it was visually brilliant with fun gameplay although, I wasn’t too impressed with the controls. The controls can be tricky to get used to, but I assume with lots of gameplay, they will become progressively easier to use.
