Gameplay

Create your own story or just read one!

Today on The Casual App Gamer, we’re reviewing something a little bit different – Episode – Choose Your Story.

Episode – Choose Your Story is an interactive fiction game where you get to choose your destiny. You choose

Features Episode stories:

  • Pitch Perfect: In Deep Treble
  • Pretty Little Liars
  • Mean Girls: Sorority Rush
  • Demi Lovato: Path to Fame
  • Clueless: School’s Out
  • Hollywood Days with Hayes
  • My Brother’s Best Friend
  • Lovestruck
  • Loving Bad
  • Georgia
  • Troublemaker
  • Falling for the Dolan Twins
  • The Royal Baby
  • Crush on Mr. Bad Boy
  • I Married a Prince
  • The Baby Project

These are all featured Episode stories that are made by the creators of the app, however, users can create their own stories to publish. So, there are way more stories to choose from if you don’t like the sound of any of the ones on the list.

For this review, I decided to play Demi Lovato: Path to Fame because it looked the most interesting and will feature more effects as it’s an Episode Original rather than fan made.

When you enter the story, you’re offered the option to change the look of your character, and you can choose her name. Edit the skin tone, hair, eyes, eyebrows, face shape, nose, and mouth until you’re happy with how your character looks and then it’s time to start…

You’re Demi Lovato’s biggest fan and you’re also an amateur singer. Somehow you end up winning a competition to sing at Demi’s sold out concert and from then on you become friends and Demi’s back up singer. But there are people who have it in for you and there’s also a love interest included…

As I said before, users can create their own stories via the app but when I tried it out it seemed to be quite a complex process and became boring after a while.

Graphics

Cute cartoony graphics!

Episode – Choose Your Story has cartoon likes that are colorful and the characters move nicely without the app lagging or crashing. I also noticed that everything looks cleaner on Episode Original stories than the fan-made ones. Like, there are more special effects in the original stories etc.

Music

Check out the themed music depending on the story!

Of course, the music is dependent on the story and mood of the game. In Demi Lovato – Path to Fame, the music in the background is instrumentals of some of Demi’s most popular songs!

Controls

Control the story by tapping!

The controls for Episode – Choose Your Story couldn’t possibly be more basic and that’s totally fine. This is a tapping game – you simply tap to get through the story, and you tap to click between speech options.

The Power of in-app Purchases

Purchases passes and gems!

Unlike most games, Episode – Choose Your Story has quite simple in-app purchases. You can purchase gems – gems allow you to make more exciting decisions during the story. You can also purchases passes – passes allow you to continue the story. Each chapter costs a pass, and you’re given 3 passes for free every day.

Here’s a little taste of how much the gems and passes cost:

  • 22 gems for £1.99
  • 60 gems for £4.99
  • 260 gems for £19.99
  • 675 gems for £48.99
  • 7 passes for £1.99
  • 18 passes for £4.99
  • 37 passes for £9.99
  • 120 passes for £38.99

I wouldn’t say you need to purchase gems and passes – you can definitely finish stories without spending a penny but they do make the game a little bit more interesting. So it’s probably worth it in the end!

The verdict

What did you think of Episode – Choose Your Story?

Episode – Choose Your Story is a good game with enticing stories but this game is definitely aimed at pre-teenage girls. The amount of romance and fanfiction style stories, it’s obvious who the target audience is. But although I don’t fit into that demographic, this game is pretty addictive. The episodes always end on a cliffhanger which makes you want to continue further – and that’s when you end up spending money (unless you can wait)!

There aren’t many games where you can be a boy instead of a girl, although it does give you the option to select male when you create your profile. I thought this was weird as they kept boys in mind when creating the profile option, but not with the actual stories.

If you’re a person who doesn’t read enough and needs a bit of a kick to read more then try out this app and see if it makes you fall back in love with getting stuck into a story!
