Everyone knows Sonic the Hedgehog, he’s the super fast creature we all love and remember from our childhoods and now he’s available on your phone. If like me, you love a good bit of nostalgia, this is definitely something you should download.
If you’ve played Sonic the Hedgehog before, you’ll be familiar with the gameplay and it hasn’t changed for the mobile version. The aim of the game is to get through the obstacles in the level like spikes, water you can drown in, baddies, and last, but not least, Eggman. Each level has two versions – once you’ve completed the second version, you will go head to head with Eggman. He will shoot at you and try to run you over but the only way you can attack him is by hitting him. Once you’ve defeated Eggman, you need to rescue the animals that he has kept hostage. Once that’s done the level is over and you move on to the next location! My favorite level is definitely Chemical Plant Zone as it’s the one that makes me feel nostalgic – I’m not very good at it though.
The graphics are pretty identical to the console version – which is amazing. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 operates just as fast, maybe even better. There is a touch menu to access a few options built over the emulated ROM. This means you can play in either full-screen mode or in arcade mode. There’s also an option to make the graphics a lower quality if you want to play this and save battery.
When it comes to music, like the graphics, it’s pretty identical to the console version. The tinny, yet the retro sound that takes you back to being 8 years old and the sound of Sonic when he’s about to use a power-up. Even the nostalgic sound when you die. It’s lovely – I wouldn’t change anything.
The controls on Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are very simple but can be tricky at the same time. Hear me out. So there are two buttons that let you control Sonic. On the left, you have arrows that go up down left and right and on the right-hand side of the screen, you have a button to jump. Sounds pretty easy to follow right? No. This way makes it quite hard to use as I am right handed and would prefer the arrows on the right-hand side of the screen.
However, I think if you were to buy yourself a controller for your phone it would work perfectly. This really is a great game.
The Power of in-app Purchases
This game is free to play – with the exception of ads. For the small price of £1.99, you can purchase the removal of ads. And with this purchase, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 will feel exactly like it did on the console when you were a kid – except on a touchscreen, of course.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a brilliant game and works perfectly on mobile. I must admit, I was scared that this would be horrible and would ruin my childhood – even though it’s made by SEGA. But I was proven wrong and it runs great, doesn’t lag and is pretty much identical to the console game.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Overall Rating: 4/5
