You’ve entered the world of Pokémon Masters – you create your own character, choose a username and you’re ready! Blue, who greets you at the beginning of the game, tells you about The Pokémon Masters League (PML) where you’ll be battling other Pokémon trainers across the globe. Each trainer can only use one Pokémon so it’s super important to create a solid team.
Greeted by the receptionist, you bump into Brock and Misty. They join your team and you land your first battle. In a turn-based battle, you use your Pokémon, Brock’s and Misty’s to fight against the opposing team.
As for the graphics, they’re the standard cartoon-style in Pokémon with the big eyes and bold features. Visually, it looks amazing and so on-brand despite it being an iOS game.
Although a lot of the conversations involve reading off your screen, the characters do talk sometimes – just not yours. But the other characters like Brock and Misty will say a few things here and there but you’ll have to read most of it, unfortunately.
The music comes from the Pokémon series and changes depending on whether you come across someone good or bad. It doesn’t get repetitive at all due to it changing all the time, and it definitely adds to the overall gameplay.
Tap the Pokémon trainer, the special attack and then click the opposing Pokémon trainer. Each Pokémon has its weakness floating above their head, so make sure you use the correct special attack depending on what their weakness is. Tapping and dragging are the main controls involved in Pokémon Masters and it’s very simple to play – you just need to be strategic.
The store is separated into 3 sections: Sync Pair Scout, Purchase Gems, and Exchange Items.

As someone who grew up with Pokémon, I was impressed with the gameplay for this game. There are a lot of Pokémon games out there that really disrespect the games we know and love. Pokémon Go was another great game available on the app store, but I think Pokémon Masters was just that little bit more like the original games from our childhoods.
If you decide to download Pokémon Masters, let us know what you think and if you agree or disagree with any of the things we said. Happy gaming and stay casual!
