Gameplay
Play as a ship on a chessboard style map and the aim of the game is to clear each map to progress on as far as you can before you eventually die. The tutorial is very straight forward, as you have a captain telling you what to do and letting you know what the items that you come across mean. For example, if you find a lamb, you can turn it into food for your journey.
Graphics
I really enjoyed the graphics for Rogue Captain. Although simple, they are colorful, stand out and are what attracted me to this game in the first place. Rogue Captain is cartoony and the graphics don’t lag at all – they run perfectly smoothly.
Music
When you first open the game to the tutorial, there’s no music whatsoever. Your captain who explains what to do, speaks in a different language but don’t worry, it is captioned in English so it’s understandable. However, according to a Reddit post, it’s poorly translated. I wouldn’t know.
After the tutorial, music starts playing. The music is guitar based and reminds me of the Hobbit for some reason. I like it, it adds to the game. It doesn’t affect the gameplay but definitely helps with the authenticity.
Controls
As for the controls, they’re simple, like the majority of games in this genre. As I said, you’re put in a chessboard style map and the aim of the game is to get through the obstacles to the dock. To get to that dock, you use the gamepad below that is made up of 4 arrows pointing upwards, downwards, left and right. I found that these controls were smooth and easy to use along with being perfect for the gameplay. I like that there are physical arrows you need to press rather than swiping as I’ve seen on other similar games. Way to go, Rogue Captain!
The Power of in-app Purchases
The shop isn’t full of many items – most of them you get to unlock as you go further on the game. From what I can see, you can purchase unlimited energy and check in all rewards will be doubled x2 for $1.99. There’s also an option to purchase a Light Cannon for 100 diamonds, but it isn’t clear exactly how you can purchase diamonds.
The Verdict
The verdict is that this is a nice little game to play when you have a bit of free time but I really do think this is aimed at children rather than anyone above the age of 18. I’m not saying it’s not fun, it’s just not for my age and I don’t think I’m the demographic seeing as it’s rated 12+.
But for a new game that’s only been updated once because of a bug, it’s fairly fun and easy to play. I would recommend this to children and anyone who likes pirates, but if you don’t fit into those, you probably won’t enjoy this game much.
