A Beginner’s Guide to Legends of Runeterra

A Beginner’s Guide to Legends of Runeterra

We’re back again with another beginner’s guide. We feel it is important to give everyone help when it comes to starting new games. We were all beginners once! Today we have a beginner’s guide on Legends of Runeterra – if you haven’t read our review yet, check it out here.

Legends of Runeterra is a card game that is set in the world of League of Legends. LoL is loved by many so Legends of Runeterra had a massive hype around it during its release. When we reviewed this game, we found it a little tricky to get into so we thought it would be a great idea to share our knowledge so you too can get used to what all the cards mean and stand for.

You Don’t Need to Spend Any Real Money

Although Legends of Runeterra has in-app purchases, it’s possible to play the game without spending a penny. If a player sticks to free-to-play, there are constant rewards that’ll get them through the game. Chests with cards and resources can be rewarded even by just leveling up each region. Simple as!

Play the tutorials

In LoR, it’s so important to play the tutorials in order to understand the gameplay properly. When players enter the game, they’re thrown into four tutorials. Each tutorial introduces a new champion and how to defeat them. Once players are done with these tutorials, they’re on their own. However, there are a lot of streamers available on Twitch and YouTube who can help players familiarize themselves with the gameplay.

Regions

There are different regions with different cards, playstyle, and champions. The regions are:

  • Noxus – Where the most aggressive warriors that specialize in making direct damage to enemies. Because of this, players can cause damage in a number of ways either with units or with direct damage from spells.
  • Shadow Isles – This region focuses on sacrificing units for amazing benefits. Some may come back to life with even better stats, summon plenty of small units, or draw some cards to get back into the game.
  • Demacia – The playstyle in Demacia is focused on getting allies on the board and buffing them. Players will be able to gradually build armies of units which will only get stronger the longer they’re around.
  • Freljord – Freljord mainly uses crowd control effects, and also mana ramp mechanics which allows late-game threats that can finish off matches on their own.
  • Ionia – Ionia focuses on outmaneuvering players’ opponents with re-summons, recalls, and stuns. It’ll be the most difficult region for beginners due to the complexity of it.
  • Piltover and Zaun – The playstyle in Piltover and Zaun consists of a lot of offensive spells. It also has cards available that allow players to replicate cards and spells players already have.

Spell Speed

Slow, fast, and burst are the three different spell speeds in this game.

  • Slow spells – They can only be made outside of battle. Once players cast a slow spell, the opponent will get the chance to play fast or burst spells in return. However, a slow spell can’t be made in response to another slow spell so keep that in mind.
  • Fast spells – Fast spells can be cast whenever. They give the opponent a chance to react by using fast or burst spells.
  • Burst spells – They resolve instantly and gives the opponent no chance to counterplay – score!

Beware of Deck Out

Screenshot from Rock Paper Shotgun.

Decks in LoR have to have exactly 40 cards so if players try to draw a card once they’ve run out, they will immediately lose the game. If both players run out of cards at the same time, which is more likely than you think, then the game will end as a tie. Always, always, always keep an eye on how many cards you have left.

Build a custom deck

As already mentioned, a deck contains 40 cards and the maximum number of duplicates of the same card in a deck is 3. Players can also use up to 6 champions in a single deck.

When building a custom deck, it’s recommended that players try to get 6 champions in so they can be drawn as often as possible. However, in order to have cards from a certain region, players need to have a champion from that region. So in conclusion, players need a champion from each region if they want to use multiple regions in their deck.

By now you should have a few pointers under your belt in order to smash your way through your first few Legends of Runeterra matches. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
