Hey, Casual Gamers!

Halloween is here yet again!  What better way to celebrate than to have one of steams best games on your phone or tablet?

Of course I’m talking about Vampire Survivors!  The game that became your streamers favorite rougelike has been brought to your phone and tablet.  If you are a casual gamer and don’t know what i’m raving about, then get ready for an epic casual review to get you up to speed!

Released in October of 2022, this massive game with a cheap price put players on an endless path to survive the night and make it to 30 minutes where they meet an untimely death…most of the time!

Pick your favorite hero, and join me in this casual review!

Gameplay

Do your best to survive!

Vampire Survivors start with one mission.  Survive the hordes of monsters wanting to end your gameplay.  Seems simple enough and at 30 minutes, your game ends with Red Death coming for any remaining hp you have.  So within that timeframe, players must destroy the endless horde of monsters while collecting power ups and weapons to get stronger as time goes by.

Each death brings casual players back to the title screen where they have a chance to do it again.  If certain conditions are met, new areas and heroes can arrive to help with the tasks.

I enjoy casual games like this because no playthrough is the same.  The real challenge is to find ways to unlock secrets and get access to even bigger rewards.

Graphics

Defeating special monsters will drop treasure chests!

Retro is the best way to explain the look of Vampire Survivors.  There’s a heavy influence from Castlevania that sets the right mood to slay the undead.  With that in mind, there’s still some rather updated and unique graphics to look for.  With a solid number of stages, additional DLCs, and secret rooms, casual players will be hardpressed to put this one down.

Music

Gain gold for each run to get permanent powerups.

Whatever you do, don’t engage Vampire Survivors without a great pair of headphones.  Matching the retro look, the soundtrack is pretty close to next level.

There’s nothing to consider annoying or not worth listening as everything audio wise pulls casual players deeper into the act of surviving.  I will mention that there’s no real SFX to listen to particularly, but when damage there is a very notable noise, so watching for that can help if the screen gets a bit crowded.

Leveling up does give a nice chime to remind what weapon needs a powerup.

Controls

Weapon evolutions are the only way to save yourself. Always pick Santa Water!

Vampire Survivors has some solid controls, considering it’s nothing but movement.  Seriously, with everything going on in this casual app, all players have to do is move around on a seemingly endless board.

There can be issues when it comes to moving and accidentally picking the wrong powerup.  It’s happened to me more than a few times, but can be taught out if noticed before you level up.  This can be a run killer if not careful, so plan accordingly.

I have to say given this slight flaw, this is still a very casual and simple way to enjoy a great casual app.

In-app Purchases

These prices are a steal!

While Vampire Survivors on steam is less than five bucks, The iPhone version has the DLCs listed at a reasonable price.  For a little under 10 bucks, you can own all the DLC content that’s on top of a massive amount of content and hidden content!

I wish the rest of this world was this fair.  I’d be so much richer!

One thing I can greatly appreciate is that players have to actually work for progression.  There’s no monetary price on getting good when it comes to this casual app and wish many more followed through.  During the hard times of life between a paycheck, it feels good to know that enjoyment doesn’t have to cost a thing.

The Verdict

Can you collect all the items?

If you haven’t downloaded Vampire Survivors yet, you are doing casual gaming wrong!  Hate to be that blunt about it, but this is the casual app others attempt to mimic.  Any type of hero or survivor game in the app store or google play store take heavily from this gem of a game.  It might be time to put down the monetized gaming and pick up something that be enjoyed for hours.
