Hey, Casual Gamers!
All manner of things go bump in the night. What would life be like if you could casually defeat those monsters in your sleep?
Stay Room offers just that while your player takes a nap! What better way to enjoy casual gaming on your phone or tablet than in the bed! This casual app tasks players to build a solid defense against monsters trying to invade your room before the night is up!

Gameplay
Stay Room doesn’t offer a nice story with a background. This is usually something I like in casual gaming, but this time around it feels like it’s missing a bit of context.
Players have a choice of being a survivor or a stalker, both having different roles in gameplay.
As a survivor, it is the player’s job to hold the room down until sunrise. Sounds simple enough, but that’s where stalkers come into play. As players attempt to fortify their defenses, stalkers have a single minded job of tearing down doors and devouring the tasty survivors within.
Building basically involves upgrading and installing the right buildings before being visited by a stalker. The learning curve tends to be rather steep after attempting a few levels, so location and build plays a huge factor in staying alive.
As a stalker, it’s all about finding the right victim to start with and casting the spell needed to push through.
Graphics
Stay Room has a style, but not the style I would brag about. Some assets seem visually pleasing…until they start walking around.
Think the old South Park. We knew it wasn’t going to be top tier graphics, but the comedy and story-line made most not care about it. This casual app feels about the same.
Don’t get me wrong, the looks matches the theme of the situation, but I wish there is a needed boost to make being a stalker feel…grittier.
Outside of nitpicking, the design and layout is enough to keep any casual gamer playing for hours.
Music
Stay Room needs some help when it comes to the background music. While the opening music feels haunting, it quickly gravitates to the realm of annoying.
Getting into the game, nothing really sticks out except the sound effects of gameplay. This is the main reason the sound isn’t muted altogether.
Yes, sadly it’s that bad, but the sounds feel like a must have starting off. Doors taking damage give off a sound that gives into the danger of being destroyed.
Once players have a few games under their belt, all sound just feels trivial and sadly, not needed. Unless the need for immersion is needed.
Controls
Stay Rooms controls are mid at best. Again, there’s not much movement survivors have to deal with once nestled into their beds. each spot in the room can be utilized for turrets, power-ups and other items that will improve chances of survival.
It’s only when players switch over to stalkers do the horrors of the controls show up. Movement is done with a touch joystick, but good luck moving at the right times after a level up. This can be critical when trying to knock down stronger doors and timing a retreat.
The level up menu for stalkers feels rather minimal with three choices after each level is earned. Timing is critical as leveling up stops movement until a choice is made. A choice to level talents is highly needed just to keep the flow of gaming at a decent pace.
In-app Purchases
This is where I have the most issues with Stay Room. The use of advertisements is exhausting. I actually thought this was a live game until the options to receive ads to keep the door alive pop up when its torn down.
Come to think of it, there’s literally ads for EVERYTHING. Want a power up? Ad to the face. Want to try out a new survivor? Ad to the face. Door about to come down on you and need to save it? You guessed it, ad to the face.
Making a purchase does come with ad tickets that are consumed in lieu of advertisements. They are also consumed without a choice to the player. This is just bad as there’s no choice to be made when it comes to wanting to use a power-up to surviving the night.
Let’s also talk about the rewards. Should players make it to the end of the timer, the reward is small. Even with an ad to the face the number increases by three at best. Meanwhile adding a new survivor to the fold cost a whopping 200 gems. Sure after a 7 days of logging in players get a new survivor, but the rest are behind a paywall.
A rather terrible turn off for such a great casual app.
The Verdict
Should Stay Room really stay on your phone or tablet? Outside of all what’s wrong with this casual app, the gameplay is what makes it a solid addition to my app library. Maybe the developers know this and were able to get away with all the issues.
I mean, not only is this fun, but the replay value keeps players coming back for more, even if there’s a mountain of advertisements to chew through.
Imagine how much better this could be with the ad removal purchase ACTUAL removing all the ads. A casual gamer can only dream.
