Hey Casual Gamers!
It’s 2013 and the internet is booming! Along comes one of the best ways to spend 99 cents on the app store: Slayin.
So why cover a casual app that’s 10 years old? Because it’s still arguable a great deal for small change. Slayin offers endless fighting a great cast of fighters to choose from.
Is it worth your casual time, or does my ranting have no merit? Let’s check it out in this casual review!
Gameplay

Slayin at the core is pretty straightforward. Select from one of several heroes to fight the endless hordes of slimes, wisps, and other evil critters. The knight is the default hero, with others locked behind fame points.
Each hero has their own way of slaying monsters, so finding the right one comes down to personal gameplay.
Leveling up comes by way of killing monsters. Every five levels an in-game item store pops up to give upgrades to weapons, armor, and health. Every ten levels a boss will appear. Defeating the boss unlocks the new world and brings the in-game store back.
The items get pretty pricey the higher the levels get, but killing monsters in rapid succession gives a point and gold bonus, so killing effectively is one of the best ways to get enough coins for the best gear.
Graphics

Slayin is pixel art heaven! It really puts one in the mood of retro gameplay, and yet it has a fresh feel. The monsters are a bit redundant, but hardly seems to be an issue as you casually kill all that approach.
The advancing of levels feels natural as the background changes as bosses are defeated. Some levels can have a bit of an overcrowded feeling, but after a few times playing it can be used as a quick way to get tons of points and gold.
Music & Sounds

Slap a good pair of headphones in and thank me later. The entire casual app has a great soundtrack that compliments Slayin’s graphics perfectly. This along with all the quirky sounds matches up perfectly for seamless and addictive gameplay.
Seriously, it’s almost insane how much value of music is given for a mere 99 cents. There’s not too many games even today that give you music for each phase of the game.
The Power of in-app Purchases

So, most people would think yeah i paid for a game now you want to mirco-transaction me to death, right?
I’m here to report that it’s far from the case with Slayin! The maximum purchase you basically have enough Fame to purchase all heroes and still have some left over to customize tombstones, which show your highest score and hero accomplished with.
There are also multiple game modes such as a boss rush mode that can be unlocked. While I’ve never been one to endorse a in-game purchase, this one actually is priced decently and unlocks huge parts of content.
Of course, Slayin can be played without making a purchase and heroes unlocked in a reasonably amount of playtime.
The Verdict

Overall, I’m beyond happy with Slayin. This casual app has aged like a fine wine, and offers great gameplay with a bumping soundtrack for a mere loose dollar. As far as games that are played on a phone or tablet, this should be the bar future developers strive for.
While we usually don’t cover casual app gaming on your phone or tablet with an initial purchase on thecasualappgamer.com this one is a highly recommended! You don’t have to break the bank for simple, addictive gameplay.
