Hey Casual Gamers! Journey back to the Saga series of yesteryear with this highly interesting mobile game from Square Enix! While many of the Romancing Sagas were not released in America during the time, we were treated with Romancing Saga 4, or better known as Saga Frontier. Saga Frontier 2 game to the states as well, but was mostly overshadowed by Squaresoft’s bigger titles of the time.
This scenario free style of play allowed you to pick whatever character you wanted from a pool with an added bonus of seeing some of the other characters in the story you picked.
If you can’t tell already, this casual app is just right for anyone that’s been playing JRPGs (Japanese Role Playing Game) for the past few decades.
Gameplay
So the story starts off innocently enough at two siblings doing an acrobatic show. Out of nowhere, a giant demon snatches one of the siblings and gloats about grabbing his 500th child. This sends Polka, the uncaptured one, on a quest to become a grave knight.
The story is actually good when compared to most RPG mobile games. Throughout the main quest line action levels and story levels switch to give you a sense of background when fighting monsters.
The gameplay also branches out to side quest and levels for item upgrades. With the only real inhibitor being stamina (Which replenishes itself after each level up) there’s a good deal of game to play, and multiple ways to upgrade your heroes.
Graphics
This is an 8-bit paradise! Romancing Saga Re;univerSe takes the best of multiple titles to make an epic game that merges the great part of not only stellar titles but pieces of my childhood.
Going questing also gives some beautiful still arts of the Saga Universe. No part of this game goes unnoticed. If you aren’t into pixels of days ago, I would highly suggest looking elsewhere for a casual mobile rpg app.
Music and Sounds
Heed the warning at the start of the game and get your favorite set of headphones for this one! There’s only a few games I’m willing to tolerate when it comes to idle music, and this is one of the great ones!
While it’s easy to play Romancing Saga Re;univerSe with no music, I’d rather not! Some of the sounds help when encountering bosses that need more than some blind auto-attacks. Not to mention, the victory music is pretty catchy.
Controls
While this is mostly a point and click game, there are some parts in combat that should be paid attention to. Combat in Romancing Saga relies on turn based actions, with the fastest unit going first.
Combos and learning is what really sets this series apart from many other RPGs. While in combat, your heroes will sometimes “learn” a new attack, adding it to their list of skills.
The attacks learned can then be used, along with other attacks, to create a combo attack which will increase output of all attacks in the combo. It may sound a bit overwhelming at first, but most of the combos will come naturally through Full-power Auto attacks. Take care because each attack costs a certain amount of energy.
Power of In-App Purchases
Romancing Saga Re;univerSe markets itself as not a “pay to win” mobile app. Anyone that has touched an app knows the constant struggle of playing against another person of whale status (Whale meaning someone that has spent a great deal of money on a game).
So far, I haven’t had the urge, or need, to buy any thing from the in-game store. That said, there’s some rather decent price breaks should you need to go that route. There are tons of in-game loot given each day from various sources! It’s rather hard to burn through most of it in one sitting.
The summoning part of this casual app is pretty amazing. Split into numerous categories, there’s a sense of controlling destiny as you search for the hero of your roster dreams.
Verdict
This should be an automatic and instant download for anyone into RPGs. Romancing Saga Re; univerSe not only gives great action, but a compelling story line that isn’t too hard to follow.
It always does my gamer heart some good when a great RPG comes rolling onto the mobile scene. Most of them just feel like they are playing themselves and I’m suppose to be there for the ride. This casual app seems to find the right balance of play style and auto play that doesn’t feel like a cash grab.
