Hey Casual Gamers!

Terminators.  There’s a possibility that one day, they will seek vengeance on humans for all robot kind.  Chickens.  The staple animal of a human diet.  Rise of Chicks gives us a casual tale of what would happen if the two ever combined.

This casual app puts players in the role of a lone chicken fending off a hungry populace fueled with rage and corn.  With endless waves of humans looking for a meal, is this chicken with mission worth your casual time?

Time to farm into this casual review!

Gameplay

Defend yourself from the human menace!

Rise of Chicks puts players into a small circle as a chicken on a mission to fend off a litany of humans.  Wave after wave, players must find the best use of corn to gain power ups until the inevitable happens.

This type of casual gaming is perfect for those Gamers looking to get a quick run in while waiting for real life to resume.  Waves get increasingly stronger with options of increasing difficulty via tiers challenge even the most hardcore of players.

The only way to really improve is collecting gold bars along the way, which provide a permanent boost to future runs.  As waves are completed, more options for powers open up, to include a lab and a chance to unlock ultimate weapons.

Graphics

Collect gold while offline!

Rise of Chicks doesn’t offer the best graphics, but thankfully those aren’t really needed in this situation.  Colorful 2D images with an array of feathers attacking humans gravitate players into the experience of not becoming the next meal for a hungry horde.

Menus have enough attention to detail to linger and ponder what power-up should get priority over others.  There is an initial feel of emptiness however, as it takes a while to finally get something into the backpack.  Even when items are collected, there seems to be not much interaction with items until certain conditions are met.

Of course this isn’t much of a deal-breaker, but it does feel like a spot that just filling up unused space.

Music

Use gold to become stronger next run!

Rise of Chicks has a bit of a generic BGM that isn’t too annoying.  At the very least, it doesn’t repeat itself while playing.  The sound effects aren’t very spectacular as well.  There’s a legitimate argument that there’s not much of a need to have the volume on while playing this casual app.

I mean, there’s not an expectation of something epic, but there is a feel of lacking.

Again, nothing that would be a deal breaker, due to the simple fact that I have a banging Spotify playlist, but at the same time, I do enjoy a good in-game soundtrack with addicting sounds that keep me thinking about it while doing other things.

Controls

Try tournaments for great prizes!

Rise of Chicks has a suitable control about it.  One major point of damage, outside of the point black attacks that happen inside the circle, is the feathers.

While the damage doesn’t seem much at first, after a few upgrades, feather damage will pay itself back in spades.  tapping the game area replenishes 10 feathers with a maximum of 600.  Depending on the speed of the game, these can go rather fast.

Of course if tapping isn’t really what you want to do, taking an advertisement to the face will also replenish feathers.  Truthfully, tapping isn’t really much of an issue as players will have to spend corn on power-ups and will have chances to tap feathers back to full.

Outside of that, this is a typical tap and enjoy type of casual app.

The Power of in-app Purchases

This is suppose to be a bundle? My wallet would leave me over these prices!

So, I’ve done my best to hold my piece until this very topic.

While I enjoy Rise of Chicks, the purchases on this casual app feels pretty awful!  I suppose it’s okay that there’s purchases for virtually everything in this casual app, but damn, they are pricey!

What’s that?  I sound like a tightwad?  Not at all!  I don’t mind spending a bit of money to remove ads every now and then, but some of these prices are just downright terrible!

I get that there’s a leaderboard and it might be competitive, but for the casual player, taking some ads to the face to improve might be the best idea.  Temptation can be real, but even that has a price limit.

The Verdict

Ready to excel past the competition?

Outside of the high prices, Rise of Chick is a solid casual app.  It’s not often I find myself cheering for the food, but this one feels right and is enjoyable enough to consume my casual time.  With weekly and monthly leaderboards to strive to, there’s always a good reason to push a few extra waves to unlock more tools and progress.

Who knows, maybe they might cut back on some of the prices and I can finally make a purchase!
