Hey, Casual Gamers!
Oh Snap! The creators (some of them anyway) of Hearthstone decided to join up with Marvel to create what could be the most ambitious card battler this side of 2020.
I am talking about the overly advertised action-packed card battler known as Marvel Snap!
So is this casual app worth your time, or are we doomed to be hit with an overabundance of ads? Let’s framebreak this review and find out!
Gameplay
Marvel Snap is pretty simple in its approach. Gather a deck of heroes and try to have more power than your opponent in three different locations before the end of turn six.
Sounds pretty simple, right?
Well, locations change every game and one location is revealed per turn. These locations range from giving power to heroes to straight murdering any hero who is played there.
Truthfully, the locations offer a great deal of randomness to a huge list of playable heroes and abilities.
On top of all that, there are options to gamble progression points during games. After climbing out of the beginning ranks, losing matches can cost you precious ranking points! Knowing when to retreat and to double down is one of the hidden skill caps of this casual app.
Graphics
Marvel Snap refuses to disappoint when it comes to eye candy. Every hero has a base illustration that can be leveled up to a mythic tier. Each tier gives a card certain abilities from breaking the frame, to an awesome 3D appearance.
Saying this casual app is polished is an understatement. Watching streamers play in the beta I had a feeling Marvel Snap would be visually pleasing at worst, and a great casual addiction.
When heroes are summoned to a location, they make a dazzling entrance and their abilities present themselves in a manner that you come to expect from Marvel.
Music
While it’s doable to play Marvel Snap without any sound, it’s not advisable. There are not many cues to listen for yet more of a pleasing background music with the flare of a hero coming to the board.
All the music is upbeat and pretty much headphone candy for your best set. Quick games mean that there’s not a long track that you will come to hate, but rather an upbeat tempo from start to finish.
Nothing will get you in the mood to save the world than hearing Captain America yelling for the Avengers to assemble!
Controls
If there’s anything I enjoy more, is a well-formatted casual app. Marvel Snap has a healthy number of menus, but it’s by no means overwhelming. Simple notifications show when something has been unlocked or an objective has been completed.
When it’s time to play, head to the middle button and get to work. Controls while playing are just as simple. clicking any hero will give you information on what that hero does. This comes in handy when someone like Scarlet Witch changes what the location does when she comes into play!
In-app Purchases
It’s rather easy to take this article as me foaming at the mouth over yet another great casual app, but the real question is this: how much will this cost me, Random?
Thankfully, I’ve yet to make any purchases! That’s right, by sheer relentless gameplay, I’ve managed to streak through the season pass and all the missions! The only real reason to spend any money on Marvel Snap is to buy the season pass for $10.
The season pass holds some rather decent exclusives that can’t be found elsewhere. It’s mostly emotes and variants, but I didn’t find a real need to make the purchase just yet. Maybe if I push past level 100 on the pass I’ll think differently.
The Verdict
Don’t miss out on Marvel Snap. This casual app is possibly my next casual obsession. The gameplay is easy to pick up, and the graphics and sounds keep you wanting more!
I don’t think I’ve been this hyped about a card battle app since Hearthstone. Playing now offers a few good welcome bonuses as well, so the sooner you dive in, the better!
