The Lineage series has been around for about 20 years when NCsoft launched it as its first MMO. Lineage 2: Revolution is a sequel to 2003’s Lineage 2.
To start off with, you get to create your own character. You don’t get the option to pick a character or a face, but you do get to pick from three different hairstyles (Oooooh!) Pick a class (rogue, warrior, or mystic), enter your name, and get ready to get questing. Well, auto-questing. But we’ll get to that.
You can control yourself and move around the map, but it’s a little bit pointless because of the auto-questing feature. Tapping a quest automatically takes your character to the goal, this is where you’ll probably talk to someone. And apart from challenge dungeons and PvP mode, it’s literally just an automatic game. Which made me think: what’s the point? The majority of the game is basically managing equipment, upgrading skills, and unlocking achievements.
I understand that people who are into these types of games would love the fact that it auto-plays for you. But I like games with a bit of action, not just something I can sit and have next to me while I do something completely different.
I originally decided to review this app because it was under the “Amazing Graphics” heading on the App Store… Yes, the graphics are amazing but god does the game lag because of it. Everything is super detailed, especially in the little video at the beginning, but the lagging is just something that kept frustrating me. Not only did it lag but the game completely crashed on a few occasions.
Although the graphics are nice, I feel like Lineage 2 is trying too hard to look like a PC MMO, and that may be off-putting to some people. For example, the UI takes up way too much of the screen, it’s pretty overwhelming.
The music is pretty annoying. It’s very repetitive but I guess it matches the theme and look of the game. The music is very intense with a lot of drums and violins. I’d probably enjoy it if it wasn’t on a 30-second loop. There aren’t really any added sounds apart from when your character attacks it says “ha!”. It’s a little bit disappointing as I feel like it could’ve added to the realness of the game.
The controls… well, we’ve spoken about that in short. As I’ve said, you pretty much don’t have to do anything in Lineage 2: Revolution apart from tapping on quests – the rest of the work will be done for you.
The shop is full of ridiculous amounts of items, but the recommended section is what caught my eye the most. I don’t believe you need anything from the shop to progress in this game, but hey I could be wrong, all I could focus on was the lagging,
and so on…
Of course, you can purchase things individually, but if you’re wanting to save money it’s best to purchase a bundle.
I feel as if the only way you can truly enjoy this game is if you can push away your expectations of a full MMORPG experience and appreciate the fact that Lineage 2 has a condensed version of that.
Lineage 2: Revolution is proof that an MMORPG format can in fact work on a mobile platform – to some extent anyway. As this game currently is, I wouldn’t exactly call it fun. I was bored a lot of the time, however, I can imagine after a few improvements (cough, auto questing) it could become a bit more thrilling.
With a less complicated UI and a more compelling story, this could definitely become a popular game.
