Hey Casual Gamers! I’ve often wondered what it would be like being a rampaging monster on a little town.
Would I feel the bullets coming from the military? Which building would I smash? Would I meet any other Kaijus?
I am Monster magically answers some of these questions (not the question of transformation, but close enough I guess!). Lets check out this casual review and see if it’s even worth our casual time!
Gameplay
As most games with rampaging monsters, there was a moment of peace. Then, as if by magic, monsters appeared and started terrorizing the districts of the world!
This take on the Idle RPG genre is a rather welcomed addition.
Leveling monsters is quick and to the point and the first few levels there’s a real sense of vulnerability. Most of the in-game tutorial will show the ropes on what to do and how to get to what menu to power up.
There’s a plentiful number of monsters to obtain! Find your favorite and crush the District to pieces!
Graphics
I can’t deny it, but the cartoon 3d graphics are doing it for me. I love the destruction and the helpless army getting pummeled, zapped, or whatever the pig does.
The boss fights as the level increases become more of a fight of dominance. Just remember, the bigger they are, the harder they will fall!
Music
I’m not too much of a fan of the background music, although it does suit the situation. The explosions are a bit fun, but not after hearing it a few hundred times. There’s also a siren in the background that can mess with you if you forget about it.
I am Monster really isn’t about the music, it’s all about the destruction! Although some better sounds of destruction wouldn’t hurt!
Controls
This is a click adventure. Not much to control but resources that go to leveling different aspects of your monsters.
It’s not too bad of a setup really. Hitting the Apocalypse button will only reset the blue energy power-ups, and the current district back to district 1.
The talent tree every monster gets is a nice addition to this casual app. It makes leveling easier and more suited for any Kaiju Trio Play-style.
The Power of in-app Purchases
Thankfully, there’s no ads after levels or anything cringe-worthy like that. There are tons of ads that usually double rewards or give evolution gifts.
Outside of the gifts, this is a pretty ad free experience.
The main in-game currency is crystals. There’s normal price breaks for bulk cases. There’s also a subscription option that offers double DNA (needed to evolve monsters) 50 crystals daily, and extra missions for rewards that starts at 9.99 a month.
It doesn’t seem to have an option to turn off the ads for rewards. Bummer. I suppose being able to summon more will be beneficial in the long run. Just don’t forget to end your subscription once there’s no more interest in this causal app!
The Verdict
Overall, I wouldn’t kick I Am Monster out of my phone during sweeps week (or whenever you notice your memory is close to being full). It’s funny enough to level up your monsters a few time, and some of the fights in the later stages are pretty epic.
I also enjoy the concept of monsters growing when they reach a new tier level. I can only imagine what they must look like at max level!
