Dumb Ways to Die is a game made by Metro Trains in Melbourne in order to raise awareness for train safety. In 2012, the city released a Dumb Ways to Die song that is ridiculously catchy and will definitely stick in your head for the rest of your life.

Gameplay

Try not to die!

If I was to compare this game to another, it would be WarioWare Smooth Moves (P.S, if you’ve never played that game – you’re missing out.) Dumb Ways to Die is delivered primarily by a procession of frantic micro-games. In these micro-games, you have to try not to die. If you die, you lose a life and you only have 3 of those.

The micro-games range from

  • flicking piranas away from biting you
  • getting toast out of a toaster with a fork
  • moving away from the yellow line and a train station
  • swatting away wasps from your face
  • cleaning up throw up

and more. If you fail any of these tasks, you will die a dumb death.

There are characters in Dumb Ways to Die that look like beans. Each one of them has their own dilemma that you need to fix in just a few seconds. As you progress in the game, the micro-games get faster and it gets ridiculously hard. Some of them are near impossible to complete.

Graphics

The graphics are cute and cartoony!

Visually, Dumb Ways to Die doesn’t have much to offer – but that isn’t to say it’s bad. The game is very cartoon-based and the characters are very cute with their own little personalities, although they all share a low IQ as it seems. The game doesn’t lag at all and the characters move perfectly.

Music

During the gameplay, there’s music playing in the background that is very retro-esque and kind of reminds me of Super Mario at the same time. I liked it and it didn’t get annoying despite being quite repetitive. As you progressed in the game and everything gets faster, the music also gets faster.

The sound, on the other hand, differ from which micro-game you’re playing – for example, when one of the characters puke, they make a puking sound and the sound it makes when you wipe it up is, well, a wiping sound as you can probably guess. There’s also a game where you have to stop one of the characters from falling and as they lean over, it sounds like a creaky door or floorboard.

Controls

The controls differ for each micro-game!

The controls are simple, but the amount of time you have to complete the micro-game makes them a lot harder. For some, all you’ll have to do is swipe or tap but for others, you’ll have to tilt your phone screen and it can become tricky.

The Verdict

What did you think of Dumb Ways to Die?!

Dumb Ways to Die is a great game to play and the story behind it makes it even better. The fact that this game was made to teach people about train safety and is still ridiculously fun is great! Who knew education could be so fun? I remember initially playing this in 2013, a year after it was released and it hasn’t changed at all since – which I like.

Overall, I rate this a 4/5 because it’s a really nice, fast-paced game with no annoying energy caps so you can play as long as you want. However, I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who doesn’t like blood or death. Despite it being a cartoon, I do think it can be quite violent at times.
