Gameplay

Match-3 to win!

When I found out about Dr. Mario World, I had all the high expectations. I thought it would be a bit like Super Mario Run – just better. Super Mario Run was a huge disappointment due to not being able to pass a certain point without making a purchase. It is one of the closest games to Classic Mario on the app store, so I thought Dr. Mario World might be the same, just a different theme.

I was wrong, Dr. Mario World is a match-3 game – like we needed any more of those! The game includes all of the well-loved characters, but in the most basic form of a game out there.

On the board, there are viruses that come in the colors blue, yellow and red. You’re given a certain amount of capsules that come in the same colors and it’s your job to match-3 to destroy the viruses. And it’s as simple as that.

As you progress, you can unlock other Super Mario character along with special skills but for the most part, it’s just your average match-3 game.

Graphics

The graphics match other Super Mario games!

As for the graphics, they’re alright. We are talking about a match-3 game here so they’re not going to be anything special. The characters all look like what they do on the console games. I mean, it is made by Nintendo so I didn’t expect anything less. Although they definitely downplayed the gameplay, it would be offensive for them to downplay the graphics along with it. I’m not sure if anyone would download Dr. Mario World in that case.

Music & Sounds

So disappointingly enough, the background music is not the classic Super Mario theme tune but definitely is along the same lines. Surprinslgy, I enjoyed the music and thought it added to the overall vibe of the game although I could definitely see why someone would find it annoying. Luckily, there is a mute button like most app games.

In terms of sounds, the characters don’t talk. C’mon Nintendo, we know you have a bigger budget than that!

Controls

The controls consist of dragging and tapping!

The controls are a little different from most match-3 games as you actually drag your capsule to the viruses and you tap them to rotate them. If you let go of them, they’ll float up to the top and you can’t bring them back down once they do.

The Power of in-app Purchases

Purchase diamonds from the store!

Of course, there are in-app purchases, I didn’t expect anything less after Super Mario Run. Thankfully, you don’t have to make a purchase in this game to progress, but it definitely helps as the levels can get frustratingly hard.

Coins

You can collect coins through completing levels, and in the shop, you get a daily gift of 100 coins.

Diamonds

  • 75 diamonds for £4.99 (Special Offer)
  • 20 diamonds for £1.99
  • 53 diamonds for £4.99
  • 110 diamonds for £9.99
  • 250 diamonds for £19.99
  • 550 diamonds for £38.99
  • 1,050 diamonds for £64.99

I don’t think I can quite get over how expensive the purchases are. £65 for ONLY 1,050 diamonds? That’s crazy.

The Verdict

What did you think of Dr. Mario World?

As a whole, I don’t think Dr. Mario World is a bad game – it’s Nintendo, in my eyes, they can’t mess up. However, I do think it was poorly made in some ways and seemed as if it was only made for money – just like Super Mario Run.

It was definitely a shock to me when I found out that it was a match-3 game, and not a classic Super Mario game. As someone who grew up with Super Mario and other Nintendo icons, I was super disappointed. I’ve got to be honest and say that I don’t think Dr. Mario World is going to be staying on my phone. There are just too many match-3 games – they’re all the same to me at the end of the day.

If you decide to download Dr. Mario World, let us know what you think and if you agree or disagree with any of the things we said. Happy gaming and stay casual!
