Dot’s Home Review!
“Dot’s Home” follows a young Black woman as she travels through time to relive key moments in her family’s history where race, place, and choice collide.
This is a single-player, 2D, narrative-driven video game that follows a young Black woman in Detroit living in her grandmother’s beloved home, as she travels through time to relive key moments in her family’s history where race, place, and home collide in difficult choices.
As an interactive experience, “Dot’s Home” allows players to see the harmful systems that dictate our relationship to race and place, through the eyes of those that are most impacted. By inserting the player into scenarios where they have to make choices about how and where to live in the midst of redlining, urban renewal, and gentrification, we ask a fundamental question: “How did your family end up where they are today, and how much choice did they really have in that journey?”

Gameplay

I love story-based adventure games, and Dot’s Home did not disappoint. This adventure game follows Dot, a woman who’s living at her grandmother’s home in Detroit. The game focuses heavily on the difficulties people of color, immigrants, and lower-income people in the US face with concerns to housing. Not only does the game tell its story perfectly, but it was also enticing.
You control Dot as she makes her way through the story, making choices for her and solving puzzles throughout. I enjoyed the gameplay a lot but the narrative beats it.
Graphics

The graphics were gorgeous and gave the neighborhood the exact vibe the developer wanted. I also thought the characters looked amazing and their personalities shined through!
Music & Sounds
The audio was probably my least favorite part of the game down to the fact the characters didn’t speak. There’s a lot of reading included in the gameplay so if that isn’t your thing then I’d give it a miss.
Controls

To control, tap on an item or your floor for Dot to walk to it. The controls were easy to follow and didn’t take long to get used to it all.
In-app Purchases

When I saw this game on the app store, I assumed it was going to be one of those story adventure games where you have to pay to unlock the rest of it. But I was wrong. Dot’s Home is completely free to play with no in-app purchases.
The Verdict

Not only is this a free adventure game but it tells an important story of what people of color have to face in their day-to-day lives. In my opinion, I think it’s important for everyone to play this game and follow the story…
