Hey, Casual Gamers!

Randomness is the spice of life.  I’m at the point where I have so many apps on my phone I just close my eyes and pick one.  Who knew RNG was going to take over?

Dice Vs Monsters offers casual players a way to beat the wave on monsters with a few clicks on the dice.  Is this approach to victory worth your casual time?

Load up your favorite pair and join me in this casual review!

Gameplay

Each hero comes with special abilities to unlock.

Dice Vs Monsters drop players behind a wall with the power to summon heroes to fight the waves of incoming monsters.  With a rather simple premise it’s easy to start this casual app.  Sadly, this is where it starts to fall short.

I’m not entirely sure if it’s a steep learning curve, a paywall, or just horrid luck, but this is a slugfest of a game.  Getting through some of the introduction levels seems all well and good, but after a few levels, the wall seems just a flimsy as the heroes protecting it.

Maybe the point was to just have players upgrade as fast as possible while having a sense of urgency as there’s not enough firepower to stop the monsters from attacking the wall.  Maybe there’s a hint of rougelite thrown in to get players to keep playing.

Whatever it’s trying to do it just feels like it’s failing more ways than one.

Graphics

Power Ups feel not strong enough for the situation.

Dice Vs Monsters has a hint of different graphics, but not anything that could say it’s polished.  This casual app has it’s own feel and vibe towards it’s overall theme, but there’s also a sense of “half-assed design” in it.

This is rather disappointing as the dice rolls feel manageable while playing, but the heroes attacks just feel lackluster.  Not just in firepower, but also in visualization.

The monsters, while seemly creative, feel boring and stale after a few attempts at failing.  The number doesn’t feel like the issue, but the way they interact with the player doesn’t really do it for me in this style of casual gaming.

Perhaps I’m being a bit unkind in my criticisms with this casual app, but that’s why thecasualappgamer.com is here for.  So you can save your time and phone space not having to be a part of stale gaming.

Music

Clearing all the waves give scattered prizes!

Dice Vs Monsters doesn’t have much when it comes to a soundtrack.  Truthfully it felt like I played with no volume on as there’s nothing that gives me a memorable vibe with the background music.

Not even the sounds and effects of gameplay really do it for me.  No real explosions, nothing super technical about kills.  Just a random die or two rolling away.

I don’t really need a symphony of action when playing casual apps, but I’d like to at least be enveloped in gameplay with some tunes that I can hum to while random people look at me playing.

Controls

Power dice up in the spellbook after games.

Dice Vs Monsters thankfully doesn’t have much controls to worry about.  I wish there was a way to roll your own dice for power-ups or something that lets players interact with.  This casual app quickly becomes boring as everything is automatic.

Isn’t that the appeal of dice?  rolling for the right combination that gets you the big win?

As I digress,  this wouldn’t be that bad of a casual app should they just add more…interaction.  There might be something good here, but not the way it is now.

In-app Purchases

The lack of sales disturb me.

Let’s get to the annoying part about Dice Vs Monsters.

The amount of random ads in this casual app is too much.  I should know about too much.  All I do is play app games on my phone or tablet.  I had my fair share of ads to the face I should get stock in it.

Not to mention there’s always an ad somewhere in the gameplay that just take the sails out of my motivation.  There doesn’t seem to be any convincing reason to make a legit purchase as the only one that caught my eye was the no ads purchase.

Truthfully I’m not even sure if I liked this casual game enough for all that.

The Verdict

That poor wall gets rocked so easy.

At the end of the day, Dice Vs Monster has that nah fam type of energy.  There’s something that could really be great with this casual app, but there’s just a feeling of going nowhere unless players are ready to hop over the paywall.

The leveling up process outside of gaming feels rather not needed.  It really doesn’t feel like the dice get any better.  Even after a decent leveling the increases are just too small to even register.  Add random ads during decisions and that’s a wonderful combination to get me to stop playing.

Happy Gaming and as always, Keep it Casual.
