Gameplay

Race against crew members!

I had high hopes for this game and I was slightly disappointed. Read on to find out why…

So, to play CSR Racing, you’re given a standard car and obviously, the aim of the game is to win the race. Your main focus is to change gear at the right time in order to go faster. If you change gear too early or too late, you will fall back. If you hit it perfectly, you will drive faster and it will get you further along in the race. Unlike other racing games I’ve played from the app store, CSR Racing doesn’t focus on steering or anything you’d think. Which to me makes it less than exciting.

Once you get into the game, there is a storyline. There are a bunch of gangs around the map and you need to beat the four crew members and then the crew leader to become the fastest racer in the city. This to me reminds me a lot like Fastlane as it also had crews involved.

The first person you’re up against is Luther and the game purposely makes you lose the race so you’re forced to upgrade your engine and earn your way to getting to race him again. The race is labeled as “Extreme” and you cannot race until it’s labeled “Challenging” or “Easy” which I just think is another way of trying to force real cash out of you.

Graphics

Amazing graphics that’ll blow you away!

The graphics are amazing. CSR Racing was actually under the tab “Amazing graphics on iPhone X” and even on an old generation iPad, they look great. CSR Racing doesn’t lag and everything looks smooth, vibrant and colorful. This was one of my most favorite things about the game.

Music

As I say in most of my reviews, the music is annoying! It’s very rare to come across an app game that doesn’t have ridiculously repetitive music – and this isn’t one of those rare games! Don’t get me wrong, the music is nice, it hypes you up for the game but after a while, you’re frantically trying to turn sound off in the settings. Probably not the best.

As you would expect in a racing game, there are sounds like revving, zooming, and horns beeping. I like these effects, but it just wouldn’t be a racing game without them. So let’s not applaud basic features.

Controls

Control your vehicle by tapping the gear button!

CSR Racing, unfortunately, doesn’t allow you to steer or break, all you have to do is accelerate in the beginning to rev up the car to gain a good start. Instead, the controls focus on the timing of gear shifts and a button you hit to release NOS, which gives you an extra boost. Like I mentioned earlier, you have to be pretty precise with your gear shifts to get further in the race and it can be hard at times.

The Power of in-app Purchases

Purchase upgrades to better your experience!

It feels like in-app purchases are important if you want to get far in CSR Racing. As I mentioned earlier on in this review, you’re basically forced to upgrade your engine in order to race the first crew, and you can either play lots of other races to earn the money or just straight up pay with real cash. If you become addicted to this game, you’ll probably end up spending your real cash. Here are a few things you can purchase in the store:

Cars

Packs

And like most app games, you can purchase cash and gold to purchase other things.

Another thing to note is that this game runs on an “energy” system which is definitely another quick way to earn money. Each full tank of gas holds ten units, and each race uses one or more units depending on its length and difficulty. When the tank is empty, you have to spend gold to refill it or wait for ages for it to refill itself.

The Verdict

What did you think of CSR Racing?

CSR Racing is a very simple, but entertaining game. Although I’m not the biggest fan of the gameplay, I can absolutely see why this game is popular. Not everyone has all the time in the world and this game is perfect to keep you entertained for short bursts at a time.

There is actually a second CSR Racing available to play, and it seems to be a little bit better in terms of controls. Let us know in the comments if you’ve ever played it and we’ll be sure to do a review!
