The little creatures of Minutia lived in peace and harmony until the meteor smashed into Mount Boom, bringing with it a strange force that transformed the Slugs who lived there into an army of greedy, greenery-gobbling pests.
Now, the Slugs are taking over the world, munching a path through Minutia and sliming up everything they touch!
But a brave band of heroes is fighting back! Left alone when the Slugs conquered most of Minutia, these unlikely champions are on an epic quest to solve the mystery of Mount Boom and beat back the Slug advance.
To get to Mount Boom, they’ll need to become… the BEST FIEND”

If you spend a lot of time on YouTube, you might have noticed that YouTubers have been heavily promoting Best Fiends over the past few years. But we’re going to see if this game is actually worth playing…
Gameplay
From playing Best Fiends for a solid 30 minutes, I discovered that there isn’t anything exactly new about it. It’s a match-3 game, well, you can actually match as many icons as you want. But typically, you match icons together to score points.
You will get to travel through the world of Minutia with the fiends following you, completing various 7×7 boards. The fiends act as your battle crew – they utilize matches you make to attack the slugs. But be careful, you only have a set number of moves – they range from collecting a certain amount of a specific color to defeating a certain number of slugs.
Unfortunately, Best Fiends has an energy system. You start the game with 20 bolts of energy and playing a level will cost you one energy. This means that unless you pay for more energy, you will have limited time whenever you want to play. The energy will recharge itself every 10 minutes and you get full energy every 3 hours which means you get 10 plays every 3 hours. And as Best Fiends is pretty addictive, it will be hard to not make in-app purchases.
Graphics
On the world map, there are quite a few sections. To start off with, you’re in Green Glades which is, you guessed it, green. There are trees and water everywhere and everything seems pretty normal looking. Once you’ve completed Green Glades, you move onto Frozen Hills where everything is a lot icier – and the game becomes a lot harder once you get to that stage.
As for the characters, there are 5 classes of characters in each section and each character has their own color. You start the game with one bug and over time you end up unlocking more bugs. Each bug you collect can be evolved up to 5 times, and as they do they become significantly stronger. The bugs are super cute and come in a large variety so it’s difficult to get sick of them. My favorite is probably Kwincy as he gives the best power-ups.
Music
I quite enjoyed the music – it’s very classical based with a slight edge to it. It kind of makes me feel like I’m going to enter a fairy kingdom if that makes sense.
When you enter the actual gameplay, the music speeds up and of course, there are extra sounds. The slugs make a burping sound when they die and when you match the icons correctly there is a crunch sound. As you win, your fiends do a little cheer and there’s celebratory music along with a females voice saying “well done”.
Controls
As for most match-3 games, the idea is to swipe to make a match. For Best Fiends, it is slightly different. To make a match you put your finger on the chosen colored icon and then drag as far as it will let you to make an attack on the slugs. This is fairly straightforward and I don’t see how they could’ve made the controls any more simple to make.

The Verdict
I think Best Fiends is an amazing game and I am not surprised that throughout a period of time, everyone was playing it. I like how you can make connections with your fiends and upgrade them to the best of their ability. The only thing I’m not a massive fan of is the energy system but it’s a quick and easy way to get their players to make purchases. So I can kind of understand as it’s a free game.
If you decide to download Best Fiends, let us know what you think and if you agree or disagree with any of the things we said. Happy gaming and stay casual!
