Hey Casual Gamers, got a rather interesting blend of awesomeness and retro cartoons to talk about today! If you were born in the late 70s and 80s, you had the immense pleasure of getting a big bowl of cereal, and finding your favorite spot on the coach to take in some epic Saturday Morning cartoons! While we do have Netflix to create our own cartoon playlist and other ways, it warms my cold casual gamer heart when I get to talk about the OG of cartoons. The Looney Tunes, with casual app gaming!
Gameplay
Looney Tunes: Worlds of Mayhem starts with our favorite hero. Bugs Bunny walks through the forest when he sees Marvin Martian collecting toons with his Randomizer weapon! Bugs springs into action to thwart the mischievous martian, only to find out that Marvin has been busy going through each toon world, collecting and forcing other toons to fight for him!
The instant take away from this was the quick and brief tutorial. It allowed immersion into fights that much easier. This is a turn based game with stats and special moves leading the way to victory. Each toon you free will help you fight (as long as you obtain enough shards to activate them) against different groups as you traverse through the lands.
After a few fights and levels, you are introduced into Looney Tunes PVP section of the game. This starts with collecting crates given by the game with up to four of your toons defending the crate from other players until time expires, and you get the rewards contained. As you get stronger, so do the crates and your opponents protecting the higher tier crates!
Graphics
Everyone of your favorite toons have received a wonderful 2018 face-lift! From Bugs to Wile E Coyote, I felt for the first time I was able to control the actions of my favorite stars. The actions during the battle were cartoonish enough to enjoy and laugh when bugs delivers a TNT filled package. Or when someone just randomly gets a club over the head!
I guess looking at all this, I could understand why people thought these cartoons were a little violent. Oddly enough, compared to the media of today, the actions the toons use just seem like the norm. And very comical. Even after taking an explosion or an anvil to the head gave the receiver of the attack briefly reacts to the damage. When publishers of games take that kind of attention to detail in a game, it keeps you wanting to play even more!
Music
Now this is one of those special apps that deserves all your earphone attention! From the start you are introduced with the Looney Tunes opening melody. A song I sure I’ve heard in my sleep before! It does set you in the right mood for ACME products! The menu music is light and whimsical, so going AFK to do something while having the music on will keep you happy if you are into cartoon music!
When fighting, the music during battle stays subtle, but remains on the same Looney Tunes track. Each move and special moves comes with it’s own array of sounds and birds whistling, instantly reminding of your for favorite episode from where the toon was taken from.
It’s worth noting that the music seems to be more of a nostalgia feel for me. If you really aren’t into Looney Tunes, then the music won’t suit you well and you may find it slightly annoying just based off the random toon sound effects linke bonks and sirens.
Controls
Thankfully controls are no issue here! the menus were exceptional and notifications lead you where you needed to go in order to level up and achieve more in-game content. The world menu where you go and put your toons to work building seems a bit off. It took a few tries but once I realized what was going on (basically building and moving the buildings) it was pretty easy to complete the task and finish my daily goal list!
The Power of In-App Purchases
So, is Looney Tunes: Worlds of Mayhem worth spending that hard earned cash on? Well, I haven’t ran into Taz yet, so there’s one thing holding me back. The other is that while the welcome offer seems okay, the usage of spending gems on this game seems pretty big. I could blow through 600 gems in one sitting and would just get shards of a toon I wanted instead of a whole toon.
There’s enough given in game to not even worry about purchasing items, but I haven’t really experienced high levels of PVP in this game yet. Randomizers and dynamite needed to level up comes from almost every task completed starting off.
This is still a fairly new game, so maybe some bundles and sales are in the works!
Verdict
In summary, this one is a keeper. Not just for my childhood, but for the gameplay as well! The special moves alone took me back to a place of complaining about Captain Crunch shredding the roof of my mouth, and hogging the remote to watch a marathon of the Road-Runner show. I look forward to the community this game will build and hope to see my readers on the PVP ladders when it’s time to casually climb our way to the top!
