This game caught my eye on the app store because it reminded me of a modern day Tetris. I also thought it was super aesthetically pleasing, so I downloaded it and gave it a go. Keep reading to see what I thought about 1010!

Gameplay

Match 10 cubes in a row to gain points!

1010! is described as a minimalistic and aesthetically cohesive puzzle game with a simple premise: clear lines. And that it is. This game is like Tetris has gone through a hipster machine – and I love it.

So the gameplay… pretty straightforward as you can imagine. At the bottom of the page, you’re given shapes that are, like I said, similar to the type on Tetris. It’s your job to strategically drag each shape to the board (which happens to be an empty space of 10 x 10 tiles). If you arrange 10 blocks in a row horizontally or vertically, the row will vanish. That’s what you want.

It’s so easy to be tricked into thinking this game is easy. It may have no time limit but that doesn’t mean it’s not hard.

Graphics

The graphics are minimalistic and colorful!

As you can see, the graphics in 1010! aren’t exactly mindblowing – but they don’t need to be. We really don’t need to see super detailed blocks. The color schemes are really nice and you also have the ability to change them to your taste – some for free, some for the in-game currency.

The color schemes on 1010! are day, night, soft, bees, clock, ice, baby, kids, space, coffee, candy, purple, black, neon, and dragons.

I personally stuck to the night theme as I felt it was easier to look at, especially when I was lying in bed at night playing it (yes, it’s addictive).

Music

There isn’t any music in this game – thankfully, because quite frankly, I think it would ruin the aesthetic. However, there are sounds for every noise you make. When you place your shapes, there is a plop noise and there’s also a noise for when you arrange 1o blocks in a row.

Controls

So there aren’t exactly controls as such as 1010! however, to place your shapes onto the grid you need to drag them. Unfortunately, once you’ve placed the shape, you can’t move them. But I guess that would make the game a heck of a lot harder so I understand.

The Power of in-app Purchases

Remove ads for £1.99!

1010! technically doesn’t have any in-app purchases apart from the removal of ads which costs £1.99. The game themes cost stars which you earn from completing levels but there’s currently no way to just straight up buy them.

I wouldn’t say that purchasing the removal of ads is worth it as they don’t even pop up that often which is nice. Although, when they do, they do ruin the whole feel and aesthetic of the game if I’m honest.

The verdict

I have really enjoyed playing 1010! despite only downloading it because I thought it looked aesthetically pleasing. When it comes to puzzle games, I become a little worried because I always think they’re going to be Math based, 1010! included so I was super happy to find out it wasn’t.

The only thing I could say against this 1010! is that it would have been helpful to have a tutorial at the beginning of the game. I wasn’t exactly sure what the aim of the game was. Did I need to fill the tile? Was I allowed blocks at the top? That being said, it didn’t take a long time to figure out what to do.

If you decide to download 1010, let us know what you thought and if you agree or disagree with any of the things we said. Happy gaming!
