Gameplay

Battle your Mortys against other Mortys!

If you’ve ever seen Rick and Morty, you know what it is utterly brilliant so when I found out that Adult Swim has made a game based on the show – I was both excited and worried.

When it comes to games based on movies or TV shows, I haven’t had much luck. They’ve usually been cheaply made and are just a quick path to gaining some money.

But I was definitely surprised with Pocket Mortys and I’ll tell you why.

So to start with, when you enter the game, Rick and Morty are having a conversation about what Rick is inventing. He’s making the MortyPad. The MortyPad is for collecting stats on Mortys. When suddenly a portal opens up in the garage. Another Rick and Morty come through it and the other rick decides to put his Morty up against Morty in a battle that is very similar to Pokémon.

Once you’ve collected a few Mortys (the first being Scruffy Morty), you can pick which Morty you want to battle in the Switch tab, choose your attack from the Attack tab, put your health back up in the Item tab or just run from the match in the Run tab. Morty has outburst attack and Scruffy Morty has slam – as you go through the game you’ll be able to upgrade your attacks so they make bigger damage. The idea is to collect as many Mortys as you can and upgrade them so you’re the ultimate Morty Master.

Graphics

The graphics are very similar to the show!

The graphics are very similar to the to the show’s minimum-effort, hand-drawn aesthetic. The overall graphics also remind me of Pokémon, but not the new 3D games, the old school design. They’re very smooth, colorful and clear.

I love the graphics and I’m pleased that not too much is going on. In some games, I often find that buttons overtake the screen and it’s hard to fathom what’s going on. But this game is perfect – everything is easily accessible and doesn’t lag at all.

Music

The music, as you can probably guess is a cross between Rick and Morty and a retro game. I love everything about it and it really does add to the overall aesthetic of the gameplay.

With sounds, Rick and Morty do have actual speaking parts instead of only having speech bubbles which I think is cool. Rick also likes to make a comment after a match whether you win or lose.

Controls

Control your character with the buttons on the left and right hand of the screen!

The control panel is very easy to follow. To move around the map, you just have to press the up, down, left and right buttons. When you’re near Morty, a store or something else you can pick up, you press the A button on the right-hand side of the screen.

Whilst battling, all you have to do is tap what you want to do, probably attack, and then tap the type of attack you want to perform. That’s it.

The Power of in-app Purchases

Purchase coupons from the store!

Blips and Chitz is the name of the store in Pocket Mortys. From here you can purchase coupons and they can be spent to win special prizes and access premium services!

  • 5 coupons for £3.99
  • 15 coupons for £9.99
  • 40 coupons for £19.99
  • 125 coupons for £48.99
  • 300 coupons for £99.99
  • The Pickle Pack – Pickled Morty, Pickle Rick for £9.99

You can also get Schmeckles but the only way to get these is by watching ads – which is very odd to me but great to those who don’t want to spend real money. With the Schmeckles, you can purchase Serum which heals 20 HP or a plutonic rock which adds 50% of AP to all attacks.

However, when you enter multiplayer mode you can purchase credits. Credits work the same as coupons:

  • 5 credits for £3.99
  • 15 credits for £9.99
  • 40 credits for £19.99
  • 125 credits for £48.99
  • 300 credits for £99.99
  • and of course, the Pickle Pack

You can purchase loads of characters for credits such as Phantom Rick, Deepthroat Rick, Tiny Rick, Teacher Rick etc. Most of these cost 10 credits.

In the items section, there’s also lots you can purchase:

  • Morty Manipulator Chip for 500 Flurbos
  • Serum for 250 Flurbos
  • Poison Cure for 500 Flurbos
  • Paralyze Cure for 500 Flurbos
  • Plutonic Rock for 200 Flurbos

To gain Flurbos, like Schmeckles, you have to watch an ad.

The Verdict

What did you think of Pocket Mortys?

Pocket Mortys is a great game, Rick and Morty fan or not. Which, by the way, if you haven’t seen it, you should. I love how the graphics are similar to the show’s and the characters are also voiced by Justin Roiland – again, like the show.

It’s fun, makes me feel nostalgic and what’s best is that you probably could get away with not making any in-app purchases. Hoorah!

If you decide to download Pocket Mortys, let us know what you think and if you agree or disagree with any of the things we said. Happy gaming and stay casual!
